Living in the virtual world keeps people from feeling lonely while avoiding social risks. Thus, the over-use of electronic communication and entertainment may be viewed as a trouble-free defense against isolation. Television has been designed for us to feel as though we are sharing in real friendships and exciting lives. A laugh track, for instance, helps viewers feel like they are sharing humor with an audience. This entertainment media strategy works well, as the modern day hero often seems to be the television actor or the professional sports player. An entire industry has been enriched by bringing the glamorous stranger into our living room. Why do people care about the destructive, selfish behavior of the Hollywood star? Why do they care whether actors are marrying, fighting, drugging, birthing, cheating, and divorcing? Perhaps at a subconscious level, viewers incorporate strangers into their own personal identity. In this manner, these special strangers become idols. From the existentialist position, people create fictional associations with celebrities as a defense against isolation and meaninglessness. People don’t really love celebrities, they only love the idea of them. Yet, many celebrities, with a few notable exceptions, have done little to further God’s mission on earth. Their main contribution has been to entertain us. What if the opposite were true? What if our heroes consisted of rescuers, healers, philanthropists, and scientists? Perhaps these role models would encourage others to embark on similar missions of love and purpose. If that were so, humanity might embark on a new direction of growth.
Humanity does not appear to be embarking on a new direction of growth any time soon. I frequently listen to people lament about not having the time to maintain intimacy. However, this may be more to do with priorities rather than an issue with time. Many therapy clients complain of loneliness. The following is a hypothetical monologue from a depressed patient based on my experience as a therapist:
Everyone in the house is so busy doing their own thing. Both my husband and I work hard during the week, sometimes coming home late at night. During the evenings, we are both so tired. We get some fast food so I don’t have to cook. My husband eats while watching sports. I eat a little and then go up into the bedroom so I watch my favorite television shows and relax. Our youngest boy plays video games in his room. Our oldest daughter texts her friends with her headphones on, listening to who knows what? We do errands on the weekends, trying to get them done in-between taking the kids to soccer, basketball, and karate classes. We can’t really afford vacations anymore, but sometimes we eat out. I wish I could talk to my kids more, but they always seem so wrapped up in their own lives. All my friends say the same thing about this new generation. I don’t understand it. My daughter even texts her friends while in the same room. But it is not just them. It seems that my husband and I are complete strangers.
